Pier Paolo Pasolini is a truly iconic figure in the Italian milieu, revered by the left and by some Catholics, commented on by intellectuals and used in pop culture. In the Czech environment his name still has an air of scandal and marginality and his work is only partially known. This book aims not only to fill one of the gaps in our knowledge of Pasolini, but also to connect what is still separated in Czech perceptions of him: his cinematic and literary work, his leftism and his Christianity. For it brings together a committee of texts that precede or accompany, comment on and mirror his three biblical films. Pasolini was condemned as a blasphemer for La Ricotta (1963); he received a Catholic award for The Gospel of St. Matthew (1964); and he did not write the screenplay for St. Paul. There are thus three planned films, but actually three realised, since as a "companion" film to The Gospel Pasolini made a documentary, Sightseeing in Palestine, in which he comments on his impressions of the Holy Land and his decision to make The Gospel at home in Italy. Pasolini understood his scripts as full-fledged literary works, and then commented on the filming itself in a series of poems, so that literariness and filmicness constantly meet.
