Campbell's classic work gives examples of mythical stories, showing the truths behind the religious and mythological figures and letting the generally valid meanings emerge from them. The hero's mission is to embark on a journey and overcome obstacles. The hero's adventure takes many forms, but aspects of it are constant: the hero receives supernatural help, overcomes hardships, and painfully returns to the world where he must tell people what he has seen. We find these initiatory paths in myths, legends and fairy tales, which can serve as universal models and role models for people.
