Czech Anarchism at the Turn of the Century - From the 1890s to the Outbreak of the Great War

What was the origin of anarchism in the Czech lands? What was Omladina? Who were the poets of the "rebel generation"? How did anarchist miners and textile workers organize? What did anarchists want to subvert the state and capitalism, the army and the church with? How did anarchism relate to jewel robberies and candy smuggling? And could an anarchist political party have been formed?

The most detailed account of the history of Czech anarchism has waited almost sixty years for its publication. The book has lost none of its topicality, nor has it lost the vividness of the stories it depicts. Thanks to the author's detailed reconstruction on the basis of anarchist magazines, police sources and other sources, a picture of a movement that faced repression and misunderstanding, and yet made a significant mark not only in the history of Czech literature, emerges before us.

Václav Štěpán (21 January 1935 - 30 December 2023) was a historian. He completed his dissertation on Czech anarchism in 1966, but did not return to the subject. He became especially famous as a historian of 19th century Czech theatre.
