The book offers a unique insight into the world of the Japanese mafia. Eiji Ichiji, a man who led a crime clan at a time when the yakuza lived mainly from gambling operations, tells his story with unprecedented candour and rawness. It not only reveals the hidden corners of the world of organised crime, but also provides an authentic picture of Japanese society in the early 20th century. The book follows on from the successful title Straw and Silk, which gave readers a glimpse of life in small-town Japan a century ago, and goes even further in revealing what lies beneath the surface. Confessions of a Yakuza Boss is one of the few books published in English that dares to delve into the heart of the Japanese underworld. The translation was undertaken by Japanologist Alice Kraemerová, an expert on Japanese society and culture who was awarded the Japanese Order of the Rising Sun with Rosette in 2015 for her many years of spreading Japanese culture.
