Neumann's first poetic period (1895–1903), anarchistic and decadent, from which this anthology is taken, tends to be modestly overlooked. Critics were particularly bothered by the reversal of good and evil, the glorification of Satan, excessive pathos, and “originality at any cost.” However, Neumann’s Satan is not a negation of God, a definition against him. On the contrary, he is synonymous with Lucifer. He is therefore closest to egotism, a movement developed by Anton Szandor LaVey, for example. The author fights against the hypocrisy, indifference, and narrow-mindedness of today's society and advocates for a beautiful, sunny, and powerful development... For him, the highest goal in life is not the satisfaction of one's own needs, but the comprehensive development of the personality.
