In april 1979 Werner Herzog cooked and ate his own shoe. It was part of a bet he made with Errol Morris: if Morris could ever complete his great debut GATES OF HEAVEN, Herzog would eat his shoe. Morris made his movie on nearly no budget, embracing Herzogs basic ideas of movie making: “steal camera, steal raw stock, sneak into the studio if you have to.” The shoe was cooked for 5hrs, Herzog did not eat the sole: “when you cook chicken, you also leave out the bones”
