Michael Gira's Swans has evolved over four decades, from chaotic beginnings rooted in the reverberations of the New York new wave scene of the early 1980s to becoming one of the most respected experimental post-rock bands of our time. Its lineup changed frequently, and by the end of the 1990s it seemed to have fallen apart completely through attrition.
In 2010 Swans, billed as "the loudest band on the planet", made a triumphant return to the creative peak and the top of the music polls. They regained both their fans and critics as deserving and, more importantly, survivors of the golden era of the entire underground scene. Throughout this time, Gira has been driven by his inner desire to create music intense enough to make the listener forget their physicality. So that, as far as possible, when listening to it, he would get rid of his body and exist only as pure - transcendent - energy within the sound.
In the pages of this book, the musicians involved tell the story of the whole Swans, a unique band of the American post-punk era. Based on more than 125 original interviews, the text presents readers and listeners with the most detailed guide to the history of Swans and their work from the 1980s to the present day.
Does the concert require you to cut a piece of meat from the side and roast it? If not, Gira isn't interested.
