Christina Rossetti wrote poetry from the age of twelve, but at fourteen she suffered a nervous breakdown and severe depression. Her poems are characterized by contrasts, opposites, and symbolism, and are very colorful and evocative. From 1859 to 1870, she worked as a volunteer in a home for former prostitutes, where she was undoubtedly inspired to write her most famous collection about sin and redemption, The Goblin Market. Due to her interest in women's issues, she is considered a pioneer of feminism, but the focus of her allegorical texts of a romantic and metaphysical nature is death. "What about it? you ask. I will not answer. As for the meaning, I say only, What do I know?"
