There are very few books in which the mountain plays a major role. Raná's verse diary captures the sunlit months spent herding sheep on the slopes of the mid-mountain massif whose name she humbly adopts. In it, the strangely shaped mountain comes to life and becomes a beloved figure that provides sanctuary for an entire community of animals, plants and rocks. Idyllic visions of "possibly the world's worst shepherdess" are soon shattered by the harsh realities of local life, of which loneliness and death are a normal part. The central question of this intimate and often self-ironic account is how to declare your love for someone - and for the place! - whom we do not want to appropriate.
