The Prague metro was not meant to be just a means of transport. Fifty years ago, this construction opened up a space under the city with the potential to fulfil the modernist idea of the ability of art to cultivate man. The idea was reflected in the attention the creators paid to the architecture, the aesthetics of the interior, its lighting, the wayfinding system, the visual arts and design. The artists, along with the architects, were active co-creators of the environment, which is why Prague's underground railway is one of the most impressive in the world. Through texts and photographs, the book captures this still inspiring project as an architectural, artistic and urban planning phenomenon, as well as a unique, living trace of history in the bowels of the city.
