Flowers in the barrels of rifles as the only ammunition of the revolution and their remains as a metaphor for the fading memory of historical events are just one of the many striking motifs in the novel Os Memoráveis (The Unforgettable) by Portuguese writer Lídia Jorge. Her memoir novel focuses on the Carnation Revolution in Portugal in 1974 and provides a literary reconstruction of the military coup that ended one of Europe's longest-lasting dictatorships in a single day without violence. Decades later, three young reporters interview several direct participants in this historic event. In doing so, they encounter the oblivion into which the actors of the revolution in their country have fallen, the underappreciation of their role, and sometimes even stories of disgrace and ostracism.
Lídia Jorge (*1946) is one of the most important contemporary Portuguese writers. She has received numerous awards for her work, most recently the Médicis Prize (2023). Although her works have been translated into dozens of languages, The Unforgettable is the first novel by this author to be published in Czech. Her works include the novel The Coast of Whispers (A Costa dos Murmúrios, 1988), which reflects her personal experience in Mozambique and is one of the first works of Portuguese literature to draw on the theme of the colonial war. In 2004, it was adapted into a film of the same name, released in the Czech Republic under the title Ševelící pobřeží (The Whispering Coast).
