The climate crisis is evident everywhere. Most notably in places we don't normally think about. It is said that conflicts over basic resources—drinking water, agricultural land, and places to live—will be the triggers for future conflicts. Perhaps nowhere is this more true than in the countries of the Middle East and North Africa, which, however, only make the news in connection with political crises, not environmental ones. In The Barren Crescent, Arabist Lenka Hrabalová travels to the Euphrates and Tigris rivers to tell the story of water, its scarcity, and its strategic importance. She explores whether the Sahara can become green again and whether pumping its vast underground water reserves carries any risks. She explores the history of ancient forests and their near future, which is likely to be dry and full of fires, but also new technologies and ecological approaches. She meets with local people and foreign scientists, all of whom are looking for solutions and ways to retain moisture, cool the air, and grow crops. At the same time, she depicts the entire region from an unexpected, surprising, and necessary perspective.
