A charming, extremely funny and at the same time profound story from the present day with roots in ancient times, set in a village called Nincshof, a place settled for centuries in the easternmost tip of Austria near the Hungarian border. Strange things happen here, the inhabitants rarely leave their village, men take their wives' surnames and houses once stood on stilts to keep them from disappearing into a swamp full of eels. But modern times are also affecting the locals, and the mayor of Nincshof, fed up with politics and official gossip, wants to hide his village from the bureaucrats in Vienna and Brussels. So he and three friends devise a way to free the village from the pressures of modern demands and make sure the world forgets about it.
In the style of the former avant-garde movements, they proudly call themselves ‘oblivionists’, i.e. activists of oblivion. The oblivionists of Nincshof are taking all sorts of measures to erase their home from the memory of the present. The municipal website disappears from the internet, road signs and tourist signs are mysteriously removed overnight. Everything seems to be going smoothly. Until, of course, intruders from the town turn up unexpectedly in Nincshof. The oblivionists' plans are thwarted by a documentary filmmaker who has recently moved in, hoping to overcome job burnout by living in the countryside. Not to mention her husband, who attracts unwanted attention to Nincshof by breeding a peculiar species of goat.
