The present volume of Manifestoes of Surrealism brings the Czech reader a translation of Jean-Jacques Pauvert's 1962 Breton anthology. In addition to the manifestos themselves, we find here, for example, a set of essays and lectures entitled Position politique du surréalisme (The Political Position of Surrealism), illustrating Breton's critical attitude towards the Soviet regime and including two papers delivered in Prague, where he was invited in 1935 by Vítězslav Nezval, the founder of the Surrealist Group in the Czechoslovakia. This edition also includes an "appendix" to the first edition of the Manifesto - the automatic text The Soluble Fish (Poisson soluble, 1924), an example of the artistic realisation of Breton's innovative concept.
