The convergence of Marxist and Freudian thought, however unlikely it may have seemed at first, shifted critical thinking about society in the 20th century onto new theoretical and practical trajectories. However, it is often forgotten that its initial setting was Central Europe. Rather than a smooth fusion of one with the other, this fragile alliance sparked discussions and controversies that spilled over into a whole range of disciplines—especially philosophy, aesthetics, and, of course, psychology. The new issues of Kontradikce are devoted to this problematic legacy in the region and its echoes, traces, and relevance today.
The Czech issue offers a study of Julia Kristeva's Bulgarian heritage, as well as a translation of the important left-wing psychoanalyst Otto Fenichel with detailed commentary. The Materials section publishes the program of the Prague Lectures on Psychoanalysis with an introduction by J. Cvekl. The issue also contains non-thematic studies on the thinking of the contemporary Czech conservative left, on the theoretical and activist positions of Bolivian philosopher Silvia R. Cusicanqui, and an extensive review essay on an important contemporary book analyzing Marx's concept of power.
