Local traumas, violence, grotesque characters and an inhospitable landscape. Series such as American Gothic, True Detective and Sharp Objects have enjoyed considerable popularity and in many cases have become flagship offerings on streaming services for a time. This monograph by a FAMU research team (Veronika Klusáková, Martin Charvát, Sara Pinheiro and Petr Pláteník) explores gothic manifestations in contemporary television series set in the southern United States. The American South has been associated with the "gothic" genre since the nineteenth century, and through the so-called gothic current in literature since the 1930s, it has shaped both perceptions of the genre's thematic constants and aesthetic strategies and the political geography and culture of the South as a whole. In the wake of the rise of quality TV, there has been a "migration" of the Gothic sensibility into serial narratives, the analysis of which is the subject of this book.
