Apart from being brothers, Peter and Ivan Koubek don't have much in common. Peter is in his thirties and works as a lawyer in Dublin. He's successful, capable and comes across as a man who can't be fazed by anything. But after his father's death, he won't sleep without pills and his relationship with two very different women - his first love Sylvia, whom he still has feelings for, and Naomi, a college student who is the laughing stock of the world. Ivan is a twenty-two-year-old competitive chess player. He has always felt like a socially awkward loner, not even remotely like his nonchalant older brother. Shortly after the loss of his father, Ivan meets Margaret, a woman several years his senior with a troubled past of her own, and they quickly develop an intense relationship.
For both grieving brothers and their loves, a new in-between time is dawning. A time of longing, despair and sudden possibilities, during which they get the chance to see how much their lives can take without completely falling apart.
