The environmental fable The Mushroom is a parable without a happy ending. The fairy tale follows the story of Little Ant, who hides from the rain under a mushroom. The sponge is small and Ant Man can barely fit under it. Gradually, other animals arrive, longing for dry shelter. Despite the seeming impossibility, they all crawl under the mushroom because the mushroom grows thanks to the rain. But the rain doesn't stop. It continues to pour, and the reader can choose between several alternative endings that differ in the various predicaments the animals face: How will they cope with hunger? With illness? With other animals longing for safe shelter? With the unstable static of a sponge? With flooding? The narrative form teeters between illustrated narrative, comic strip and gamebook. The author's book has an open sewn binding and is printed using riso printing technology, including a colour frontispiece with a satellite image of rain.
