The content of the book summarizes all available information on the ten symposia, art residencies, and exhibitions and examples of the nearly five hundred artists who between 1992 and 1999 came and worked in Plasy Monastery. Compared to state visual art institutions and emerging private fine art galleries, the activities of the autonomous cultural communities of the 1990s as Hermit Foundation shared different values, such as the need for greater openness to interdisciplinarity, a critical attitude towards the contemporary art market, an interest in current artistic strategies and practices, including electronic media, or harnessing the Internet’s potential. The printed book offers narrative composed from fragments of multitude of events and the rich, participatory history of the Hermit Foundation and Center for metamedia Plasy. From the multitude of texts, events, gestures, and situations, the editors selected photographs and texts that illustrate how different international artists approached the specificity of the historical location and other circumstances. Several texts were written especially for this book, others were re-printed from various sources. The content is extended by information about iconinc photo exhibition in Plasy 9x9 which took place in 1981.
