"The freedom to say ¸noʻnoʼ is being deliberately curtailed and has therefore become a risk that one in a hundred will choose to take." The essay "Walking through the Forest" (Der Waldgang, 1951) is a parable about a forest and a forest walker, in which the author tries to show the fate and role of those who choose to resist despotic totalitarian systems. "Even a single ¸neʻhas meaning in elections. ¸Anoʻ represents surrender, but ¸neʻ represents freedom and its defense," the author writes. "ʻFreedom itself, however, is immortal, even though it wears the dress of its time every time. Moreover, it must always be reconquered."
