Beyond Species describes our attempt to look beyond our preconceptions (and misconceptions) about other species.
By talking about plants that can tolerate heavy metals which are poisonous to humans but harmless to certain plants, we blur the definition of toxicity and environmental disaster. By talking about the queer sexuality of plants we want to dismantle the myth of heteronormativity being “natural”. By discussing the bacterial collaboration to clean polluted rivers, we wonder about what makes up the living organisms. And how bacteria found their perfect place in the world even though their life consists of minimalist tasks. In the end, we all come from common, simpler lifeforms. By understanding the life of gall and fig wasps, we find an image of functioning matriarchy and almost harmless parasitism.
But the question remains. Are we even able to abandon our anthropocentric view of the world and give up this burden?
